An idyllic afternoon in Lake Bulusan, Sorsogon

It was an unexpected trip to the southernmost province in the island of Luzon, during the rainy month of August. Sorsogon is on my bucket list for a number of reasons: First, I want to see the renowned Bulusan Lake; second, I love mountains and volcanoes and I would definitely love to see Sorsogon’s own Bulusan Volcano; third, I love Bicolandia.

So when work gave me an opportunity to visit this province, I did not mind the long, weary road trip and the unexpected August weather. I have also been yearning to venture past the darling province of Albay during our previous trips.

I did not expect the wide, extensive road which started from the arch of Sorsogon. I thought it would be like the narrow and winding roads that we passed by in the provinces of Quezon and Camarines Norte. Morning was just breaking when we arrived at Sorsogon province.

I enjoyed the relaxed drive once we are in Sorsogon. I relished the view of the mountains, the hills, the rice fields, the sleepy towns. When we passed by its capital, Sorsogon City, I was pleasantly surprised that despite the size of the city, it still maintains clean surroundings. From afar, I saw the capitol building and the universities.

After passing Sorsogon City and the town of Gubat, the view of Bulusan Volcano became even more noticeable. It has its own charm, with its prominent crater.

Our destination is the Municipal Hall of Bulusan, where we will meet and assist our client. Since it was still early, and the sun has just risen, we had a stopover at the Barcelona Ruins Park in the town of Barcelona, Sorsogon. The morning vibe is infectious as there were many people, mostly senior citizens, who were already up and exercising at the park. We also watched the sunrise on the east side, by the Pacific Ocean.

After meeting with our client, we were toured around the province by my brother-in-law and his wife (who hails from Sorsogon). They were also in Sorsogon at that time and taking advantage of the long weekend.

Our first stop is at the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park. It was still a few minutes ride from the town proper and the road leading to the park is full of zigzags. However, the twist and turn is worth it. As the vehicle entered the premises, I saw the foot of the Bulusan Volcano looming ahead. And beyond, I saw the ethereal beauty that is called Bulusan Lake.

The lake water is placid. The abundant trees at the foot of the mountain are reflected on the green water. There is a stillness that one could equate with serenity. The crater of Bulusan Volcano is peeking. It’s as if it is telling you to bask in the raw beauty of the park.

There are colorful kayaks available for those who want to go paddling. There’s a boardwalk by the side of the lake where one can stay, have their picture taken (Instagram-worthy), or as meditation spot.

Near the entrance, there’s a small café where one can order the succulent hot chocolate/tablea. The bittersweet tablea is a product of Bulusan. You can pair it with pili products, such as crispy pili, coated pili, and the equally mouth-watering pastillas de pili.

We appreciate the tranquillity of the park. It’s the perfect respite after months of being busy in the city. It’s the reward after travelling on the road for twelve hours. Will I come back? Definitely! I just can’t get enough of the province of Sorsogon.
